Plastic People of the Universe: September 21

plastic_people.jpgIn 1976, a loose outfit of rock musicians inspired by artists such as Frank Zappa and the Velvet Underground had become something of a legend. Formed in the late sixties, their moody, psychedelic sound had earned them a legion of fans across communist Czechoslovakia, but also the unwanted attention of the police. With their long hair, weird sound and blatant refusal to conform to the stifling norms of the culturally barren period that followed the August 21,1968, Soviet-led invasion, they must have been the regime’s worst nightmare. “Anne and Gilbert” in Kingston: August 15 to 30

From Nancy White:

As you may have heard, our musical “Anne and Gilbert” is being produced this summer by two different companies in two different towns. The Summerside,PEI production (produced by Campbell Webster) has been running to great houses and excellent reviews (none of which mentioned the writers!!! damn!!!!!!) since mid-June. It’s a gorgeous show, best ever, directed this year  by Heidi Ford. And it goes until Oct.4.

But I really wanted to let you know about the one that’s a bit easier to get to, especially if you’re in Toronto.

It’s produced by the Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque, who also did it last year. But this year they’re doing it in the GRAND THEATRE in KINGSTON, ONTARIO, famous for its prisons, its university engineers, and its cruise ships on which the mysterious Roger James entertains. More »
