Another Hamilton busker has received a $65 ticket, this time for playing the violin on Summer's Lane, outside Hamilton Place, Saturday March 13 before the Blue Rodeo concert. He objected that he was on the sidewalk and was doing nothing wrong. The officer wrote him a ticket citing him for playing near a parking lot. The musician pointed out that the entrance to the parking garage was some distance away.
Wikipedia has a terrific article on busking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busking).In the US, the right to busk is an aspect of the right to free speech. Presumably, our Charter of Rights would offer similar protection.
Note to our new police chief: Picking on these artists who bring beauty to our wretched downtown is really cheesy. Please stop it.

CTR 141, Winter 2010
Edited by Marlis Schweitzer with Laura Levin
This issue of Canadian Theatre Review joins a growing body of scholarship on the phenomenon now widely referred to as “celebrity culture.” Since the mid-1990s, the ubiquitous and surprisingly long-standing appeal of reality television, the proliferation of online gossip sites and photo agencies, the popularity of blogs and social networking sites from Facebook to Twitter, and the incredible success of YouTube have dramatically increased the number of venues through which average citizens can view and vie for fame and fortune.
