Beach Studio Tour: May 1 – 3

Beach Studio Tour Spring 2009. Enjoy a self guided Studio Tour in Toronto’s original cottage country. On May 1, 2 and 3, you are invited into the homes and studios of local area artists for the 16th Annual Spring Beach Studio Tour. The Tour offers the work of 23 artists for sale in a variety of media including paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolour as well as hand-woven fashion, ceramics, photography, sculpture, jewellery, lamp-work glass, textile art, handbags, home décor and metal garden art. No Admission fees. Each studio will offer refreshments and a prize draw for a piece of work donated by each artist at the 12 locations.

Open Studio Visiting Artists, Tine Bech and Suzanne Nacha: opening April 30

Open Studio is pleased to present the first of two 2009 Visiting Artists’ Exhibitions featuring London, England-based artist Tine Bech and Toronto, Ontario-based artist Suzanne Nacha, April 30 to May 23, 2009. Each year Open Studio selects four professional artists with or without printmaking experience to create traditional and/or experimental works in the print medium of their choice, working collaboratively with a print media artist. These exhibitions by Bech and Nacha are the result of this intensive work period.

Artists’ talks to accompany the exhibitions will take place at Open Studio on Thursday, April 30, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, followed by an opening reception from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

City of Wine Festival: May 5 – 9

city_of_wine.jpgNightswimming presents, for the first time ever, the entire seven-play theatrical cycle City of Wine by Ned Dickens. The cycle -  about the ancient Greek city of Thebes from its founding to its collapse, the city where wine was born but best known as the home of Oedipus – will be presented twice in sequence over five wild and wonderful days, beginning with Harmonia at 4pm on Tuesday May 5 and ending with Seven at 8pm Saturday May 9. An unprecedented event in Canadian theatre history, almost 15 years in the making, the City of Wine marathon will be an event to remember. More »

2009 CanAsian International Dance Festival: May 6 – 9

Christina Petrowska Quilico Plays Music By Ann Southam: May 12

Pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico, winner of the 2007 Friends of Canadian Music Award, will perform the music of Ann Southam in memory of visual artist Aiko Suzuki and in recognition of the work of The David Suzuki Foundation.

The concert features music from Petrowska Quilico’s 22nd CD, Pond Life, and takes place at the Glenn Gould Studio, 250 Front St. W., Tuesday, May 12, 7:30 p.m.  At a reception following the concert, the Canadian Music Centre launches the CD, her sixth on the Centrediscs label. More »

Since 2003, Stan’s Cafe has brought this show to over 40 cities around the world, including Europe, Australia, and North America – this marks the first visit to Toronto. The show adapts to its setting: the country, city and building in which it is performed. From 15-tonnes of rice, the team of performers carefully weighs out quantities of rice, each grain representing a single person, to elucidate various human populations and statistics. More »

World Stage, “The Cleansing of Constance Brown”: May 5 – 9

Stan’s Cafe (pronounced kaff) brings their bold and ominous theatrical piece The Cleansing Of Constance Brown to World Stage. The audience is seated at the mouth of a specially constructed corridor and watch as only seven performers play 73 characters. With only six words of dialogue, the players run through a barrage of entrancing and alarming scenes. From mysterious office scenarios, to allusions of Guantanamo Bay, the ever changing characters in the corridor reflect images and stories across centuries. More »

York University, World Music Festival: April 30, May 1

The World Music Festival makes a stop in the Caribbean on its global sonic tour spotlighting musical traditions of five continents. From Klezmer to Cuban ensembles, from Balkan songs to West African drums to classical Chinese orchestra, the festival presents a sampling of the 20+ international cultures represented in York’s world music program. Produced by Matt Vander Woude, it packs 14 free concerts into two full days April 30 and May 1. Concerts are scheduled back-to-back from 10am to 8:30pm in the Martin Family Lounge (room 219) and Sterling Beckwith Studio (room 235) in the Accolade East Building. More »
