Steam Whistle, “UNSIGNED Indie Music Concert”: February 25th

Knowing music is the language of the heart, Steam Whistle Brewing launched their UNSIGNED Indie Music Concert Series four years back. The brewery, passionate about Pilsner, has a reputation for supporting others in their creative pursuits, and this month’s UNSIGNED line-up will deliver a stirring celebration of the indie musician and songwriter. The February 25th show hosted in the brewery’s Beer Hall, will feature the indie country, foot-stomping stylings of New Country Rehab, the blues-infused rock of The Coppertone and the indie-psych-rock of Cowlick. Admission is only $5 at the door with all proceeds from ticket sales going back to the community through the Artists’ Health Centre Foundation. Doors open at 8pm. More »

Shakespeare in Action, Canada’s leading classical company for young audiences that recently launched a revolutionary Virtual Lab on its website for teaching Shakespeare in schools, brings a new production of The Diary of Anne Frank to the stage. The Wendy Kesselman adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank opens March 1 and runs to March 13 at Central Commerce Theatre (with weekday matinees beginning February 23). Rising star Sascha Cole (Factory Theatre’s Bethune Imagined, and CanStage’s Rock’n'Roll) plays the title role. More »

Coleman Lemieux, “AllOneWord”: Feb 10 – 12

One of the playwright’s strongest works, in it he speaks of isolation and the inability to communicate. In spite of these sombre notes, Michel Tremblay masterfully employs accents of hope, love, and affection. This iconic work will be presented in French with English surtitles at the Berkeley Street Theatre from February 2 to 19, 2011.

York Music, Mark Chambers, cello: Feb 8

Music professor, cellist Mark Chambers is joined by two of his colleagues and frequent collaborators, violinist Jacques Israelievitch and pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico, for a concert February 8 at York University. The performance, featuring works by three contemporary Canadian women composers with a dash of Mozart thrown in for good measure, is part of the Department of Music’s Faculty Concert Series, taking place in the Tribute Communities Recital Hall at York’s Keele campus. Stories Off the Record is this season’s second installment of world premieres by rising choreographers in York University’s MFA Program in Dance. Graduate students Angela Blumberg, Alison Daley, Katya Kuznetsova and Anastasia Maywood are each contributing an original work to the playbill as part of their thesis productions. A new duet by guest artist Tracey Norman, who graduated last year in first cohort of MFA dance students, rounds out the program, which runs February 16 to 18 at 7:30pm in the Sandra Faire and Ivan Fecan Theatre at York’s Keele campus.
