The definitive account of the life and work of the most enigmatic and influential artist of the late twentieth century.
9pm: KISS (1963) Andy Warhol. KISS was created as a protest against the motion picture code of censors decree that on screen kisses last no longer than three seconds. BLOWJOB (1964) Andy Warhol. While it was illegal in 1964 to show an actual blow job on film Warhol rose above the law by filming the face of a young man getting his cock sucked. Bonus: Forbidden Cinema # 1: UN CHANTE D’AMOUR (1950) Jean Genet. The only film directed by Jean Genet. For years those who showed this film knew that to do so could mean arrest and serving time in prison. It is not the role of the artist to be a good citizen. It is the role of the artist always to be an outlaw.

7pm: The Great McGinty (1940) Director, Screenwriter: Preston Sturges. Actors: Brian Donlevy, Muriel Angelus, Akim Tamiroff, Allyn Joslyn, William Demarest. The moral of Preston Sturges’ first directorial effort The Great McGinty seems to be: If you’re a crook, stay a crook, because honesty will get ya every time. Sick to death of watching other directors mangle his screenplays, Preston Sturges sold this rollicking political satire to Paramount only on the condition that he be allowed to direct (for the princely sum of $10). Paramount hedged its bets by giving Sturges a slim budget and inexpensive stars; as a result, the film made back its cost several times over, and Preston Sturges’ directorial career was off and running.
9pm: BRAZIL (1985) Terry Gilliam. The Director’s cut. “Nuff said. Be here.
Saturday, January 23: THE ANARCHIST FILM FESTIVAL.
7pm: THE SEX & VIOLENCE CARTOON FESTIVAL. Once upon a time cartoons were wicked. Then the censors got into the act. “Mickey Mouse, the artistic, offspring of Walt Disney, has fallen afoul of the censors in a big way, largely because of his amazing success. Papas and mamas, especially mama, have spoken vigorously to censor boards and elsewhere about what a devilish, naughty little mouse Mickey turned out to be. Now we find that Mickey is not to drink, smoke or tease the stock in the barnyard. Mickey has been spanked. It is the old, old story. If nobody knows you, you can do anything, and if everybody knows you, you can’t do anything–except what every one approves, which is very little of anything.”– Terry Ramsaye in THE MOTION PICTURE HERALD, Feb. 29, 1932,
