Luba, Simply Luba, starring Luba Goy
In her (soon to be) iconic role as… Herself!
Pleiades Theatre in association with Red Boots Canada is thrilled to present the great Canadian comedy star Luba Goy in Luba, Simply Luba from May 7 to 26 at the Berkeley Street Theatre Downstairs.
Written by the talented stage and television writer Diane Flacks, in collaboration with Luba Goy and Andrey Tarasiuk, this sometimes hilarious but always poignant autobiographical journey covers one unique life – Luba’s.
Luba, Simply Luba is the story of how humour and creativity led the daughter of a troubled Ukrainian immigrant family to become one of our country’s most beloved female performers.
“Luba, Simply Luba is equally about the Ukrainian culture that has shaped Luba’s perspectives and the Canadian encounters that have shaped her career,” said John Van Burek, the Artistic Director of Pleiades Theatre.
“From her childhood anxiety at being tutored by the Grey Nuns in Ottawa to her fame as a radio and television star of the Royal Canadian Air Farce, this solo performance relates how one woman overcame whatever life threw her way,” said Andrey Tarasiuk who, for many years, has wanted to work with Luba to share her fascinating story with other Canadians who love her so much. Mr. Tarasiuk, the founder of Red Boots Canada and the Producer at Pleiades Theatre, is the director of this production.
Throughout the play Luba will be accompanied by Victor Mishalow, a renowned basso profondo vocalist and a master of the bandura, the 67-string, lute-like, Ukrainian national instrument.
Join Luba as she takes us on a personal and loopy trip, from her Ukrainian childhood to the high honours of Rideau Hall…and back again. You’ll meet the lady herself – along with some forty characters from her family and acquaintances, from Canadian politics, and even assorted animals – in this delightful and moving production!
