Shakespeare in Action, Double Bill — Romeo and Macbeth: April 28

Shakespeare in Action is opening its doors to the general public for one (1) day only. On Saturday April 28th Shakespeare in Action invites Toronto to celebrate Shakespeare’s 448th Birthday by seeing two of his most beloved tragedies: Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth on the same day!

Shakespeare in Action, Canada’s leading professional Shakespeare company for young audiences, is widely known for its exciting productions and for its physical commitment to the original text. This one-day event is a rare opportunity for Toronto audiences to see what young audiences and teachers have known about for years! Many School performances are already sold-out. Performances are staged in one of Toronto’s oldest schools, Central Commerce Collegiate, on an
Edwardian turn of the century stage.

“This is a very physical production. The fights are amazing,” said Sam Mooney of Mooney on Theatre; “I found myself
holding my breath, worried that someone would be a fraction of a second off and get hurt…I might be starting to nderstand why Shakespeare is considered such a master. Thank you Shakespeare in Action.”

Kelly Bedard of My Theatre
writes, “When it comes down to it, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a Romeo and Juliet as successful as this one.”

A versatile ensemble cast of nine actors, including Servern Thompson and David Shelley, take on multiple roles in both
fight-filled plays that will be performed at 2pm and 7:30pm.

Artistic Director, Michael Kelly, directs Romeo and Juliet, with a contemporary, urban style where the conflict emerges
from a blending of cultures. Kaleb Alexander plays Romeo and Shaina Silver-Baird is featured in the role of Juliet.
Ines Buchli directs Macbeth, conjuring a dark, post-apocalyptic world ruled by ambition and revenge. David Shelley and
Severn Thompson star as the formidable Macbeth couple. As the play spirals into violence, half-human witches evoke the stuff of nightmares.

Set and lighting design is by the award-winning designer Glenn Davidson and costume design by Amanda Gougeon. Master fight director, Simon Fon, brings his world-class fight choreography to both productions and Sam Sholdice adds
an evocative sound design.

Shakespeare in Action was established in 1988 by Founding Artistic Director, Michael Kelly, and continues to bring Shakespeare and other timeless stories to young audiences and families across Ontario through innovative programs and
