Artword News:

Another Hamilton busker has received a $65 ticket, this time for playing the violin on Summer's Lane, outside Hamilton Place, Saturday March 13  before the Blue Rodeo concert. He objected that he was on the sidewalk and was doing nothing wrong. The officer wrote him a ticket citing him for playing near a parking lot. The musician pointed out that the entrance to the parking garage was some distance away.

Wikipedia has a terrific article on busking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busking).In the US, the right to busk is an aspect of the right to free speech. Presumably, our Charter of Rights would offer similar protection.

Note to our new police chief: Picking on these artists who bring beauty to our wretched downtown is really cheesy. Please stop it.

Busker Crawl, Freedom of Music in Hamilton: April 23

Busker Crawl – In Support of the Freedom of Music in Hamilton
Friday April 23, Time: 4:30pm – 8:30pm, Location: James St. North

We are calling all like minded musicians and music fans to join us on Friday, April 23rd on James St. North (between York and Barton) in busking.

The city has, over the last few months, fined buskers under the provincial laws again panhandling. We are very much of the opinion that busking is art, not begging, and want to make it very clear to the city, the local law enforcement community and the provincial lawmakers that this is not something that will be tolerated in Hamilton. Judy Holliday, Oscar winner for 1950′s Born Yesterday, was a 170-IQ genius who specialized in playing dumb blondes – an act that held her in good stead when she was hauled before Senator McCarthy’s inquisitors in 1952 on suspicion of having communist sympathies. That part of her too-short life is the subject of this evocative play starring Laura Harris. More »
