Jackie Richardson at Stewart Memorial Church: November 24
Stewart Memorial Church proudly presents Jackie Richardson, one of Canada’s foremost singers of gospel, blues and jazz, at its annual turkey dinner and concert on Thursday, November 24. The event is at a new location this year, the Ukranian Catholic Church of the Resurrection Hall, Corner of Upper Wentworth and Mohawk Road. Jackie Richardson is joined by renowned bluesman Harrison Kennedy and jazz singer Colina Phillips. Dinner is from 5 pm to 7 pm, followed by the concert, 7 to 9:30 pm.
The annual turkey dinner is one of the longest running annual celebrations in the city. For more than 150 years, the event has brought together Hamiltonians from all backgrounds and faiths to share in this social gathering. First organized by the early black settlers who came to Canada from the US in search of their freedom, the event has been held on the US thanksgiving day since its started in the mid 1800’s and was a symbolic gesture to celebrate with those families and loved ones left behind in the US.
Today, the tradition remains one of the church’s most popular events and this year, for the first time, the dinner and concert will be held at a new venue as it has outgrown its own church quarters. (new venue: Ukrainian Catholic Hall located at 821 Upper Wentworth St (and Mohawk).
Along with the delicious meals, this year’s gospel concert is expected to be a sure crowd pleaser. “It’s not often we get headliners like this” says Michael Highgate, one of the event organizers. “We are thrilled to have Jackie Richardson along with award winning bluesman Harrison Kennedy and Jazz artist Colina Phillips all on the same show- its going to be a real treat”
