Grandmothers Walk to Fight Aids in Africa: June 9, 2012

we_stride.jpg“On Saturday, June 9th 2012, grandmothers from across Canada will walk in solidarity to show their support of African grandmothers who are crucial to the survival of whole communities in the struggle against the AIDS pandemic.

Grandmothers are also hoping to raise money to provide critical services and support for African grandmothers and the children orphaned by AIDS in their care. Pledges and donations can be made either on-line at www.grandmotherscampaign.org/, or at the event, to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

During the 1st International Grandmothers Gathering, held in 2006, 300 African and Canadian grandmothers were brought together in Toronto. In their joint statement to the world, the Canadian grandmothers made a promise: We will not rest until they can rest.

Canadian grandmothers who participate in this national walk will be urging their communities to support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Since the launch of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign in 2006, more than 240 groups of Canadian grandmothers have taken up the call to action and raised over $12 million. Money raised by the Campaign funds community-level organisations in 15 sub-Saharan African countries that provide grandmothers with much needed support including housing, food, transportation, micro-credit grants, grief counselling and school fees for their grandchildren.
.
In Hamilton, the national walk will unite supporters from Grandmothers of Steel and Mabibi Wa Tama, two local branches of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign who channel support through the Stephen Lewis Foundation.”
