JIM RILEY: AUYUITTUQ & VIDEO PAINTINGS
March 28 – May 24, 2009
Opening: Sunday, April 5, 2009 1:30 p.m. Marlo Panko artist talk (first floor)
2:00 p.m. Jim Riley Walking Tour (second floor)
Auyuittuq: “land that never melts” examines the impact of climate change on the Canadian Arctic. The presentation takes the form of a video installation with three video paintings and one wall projection. Riley’s use of the circle to present powerful images of icebergs, polar bears, whales, oil research sites and steel mills recalls the porthole or periscope, the moon, the earth and the infinite. The dripping, humming soundtrack is a hypnotic undercurrent reminding the viewer of the environmental dangers Canada faces in the twenty-first century.

Riley has been exploring the juxtaposition of traditional painting and video since 2005. These media, combined in this manner, become perceptual, philosophical instruments for questioning reality and the way we connect with the world. Video paintings are intended to hang on a wall like traditional paintings, rather than to be projected onto a screen. Having no audio component, video paintings rely on the visual image to communicate with the viewer. Rooted in the history of experimental film and video art, video painting sits comfortably in a shared aesthetic space that combines fine art, cinema and video.
The video paintings in this exhibition are from three bodies of work – one exploring Canadian Arctic climate change, one dealing with the experience of a personal injury, and one examining the life of the inter-city commuter.
Jim Riley’s art practice has encompassed a blend of documentary evidence, personal ideology, social commentary and artistic investigation. His recent aesthetic exploration concerns the relationship between time and perceptual memory.
Jim Riley is a video artist and curator based in Burlington, ON. He has exhibited in Canada and the United States. The artist wishes to acknowledge the support of the Ontario Arts Council, Paul Rak & Rhona Tai of Veriform Inc.in Cambridge, Scott McGovern and Ed Video Media Arts Centre. The documentation of the above video painting is by Cees Van Gemerden.
