Ronald Weihs and Judith Sandiford opened Artword Gallery, along with Artword Theatre, in 1993. The gallery and theatre were on the second floor of a turn-of-the-century factory building at 81 Portland Street in downtown Toronto.

In 1998, Artword began a renovation project to transform the landlord's former garment factory (next door to 81 Portland, at 75 Portland) into two performance spaces and a gallery. The gallery occupied about 1500 square feet, with white walls 16-feet high. (See the link for the "Renovation Story".)
From April 1999 to February 2006, Artword Gallery was a vital and active space, as well as an exhibition gallery. It was home to many art shows, as well as a space for theatre and art openings, new music concerts and a range of social events. The space also served as the lobby to both theatre spaces. Theatre audiences could enjoy a stimulating environment on their way to a performance.

Artword Gallery at 75 Portland 1999 to 2006The gallery closed at 75 Portland in February 2006 when our landlord sold the property to a condo developer.

Artword Gallery showcased paintings, drawings and photography, selected on their artistic merit, integrity of vision and skill with materials. Artword is interested in building bridges between the visual arts and other art forms.
