Artword Theatre's production of
If Cows Could Fly offers two benefit performances
The Saturday February
19 performance of If Cows Could Fly by Allan
Merovitz is being offered by Artword as a fundraiser on behalf of the
North York Harvest Food Bank. All non-perishable canned goods
collected from the 8:00 pm show on February 19 will be donated
to the Food Bank.
Loren
Freid, the Executive Director of the North York Harvest Food Bank,
asks that people donate cans of tuna, bottled fruit juices, canned
fruit, baby formula, peanut butter and canned vegetables. These items
are in high demand but are low in stock.
Tickets
for the fundraising performance are a special price of $10 plus a
minimum donation of five canned goods per person, with all
non-perishable canned goods collected going to the Food Bank.
If
Cows Could Fly opens Wednesday, February 16, 2000 and runs to
March 12. For ticket information, call Artword Theatre box office
416-408-ARTD(416-408-2783).
The Sunday February 27 performance of
If Cows Could Fly is being offered by Artword as a
benefit on behalf of the Matti Baranovsky Memorial Fund. All
proceeds from box office sales of the 7:30 pm show on February
27 will be donated to the Fund through Northview Heights Secondary
School.
The
Fund has launched a "backpack patch" anti-violence campaign for
students at the school. Matti always carried a backpack. The patches
are a way for students to remember what happened and proclaim their
support for anti-violence.
Tickets
for the benefit performance are $20 for adults and $15 for students
and seniors, with all proceeds going to the Fund.
If
Cows Could Fly, a play about growing up Jewish in Smiths
Falls, is written and performed by noted singer, actor and
storyteller Allan Merovitz. Allan, who is one of the foremost
interpreters of Yiddish music in Canada, grew up in Smiths Falls in
the Ottawa Valley in a family of Hassidic Jews. His story, and the
story of his family, is a microcosm of the Jewish experience
world-wide.
Allan
says, "This tragic event has a lot of resonance for me and is
reflected in some of the stories of my family that I use in the play.
I feel strongly that this play should be used to further
understanding among people."
