Canboulay Dance Theatre's
8th Season
Comes alive with the sound of pan music
RONALD
TAYLOR, the driving force behind Canboulay Dance
Theatre will be presenting his eighth season, in
collaboration with Artword Theatre, October 24-27, 2001,
with all proceeds from the opening night performance going
to the A.T. Children's Project.
The
opening night of Symphonic Steel is a benefit
for a devastating genetic disease called "AT"
(Ataxia-Telangiectasia). It is something like cerebral
palsy, but progressive. A wonderful and brave child of one
of Ronald's company has this disease. For more information
about A.T. Children's Project. visit their site:
http://www.atcp.org/
Tickets for the
benefit are $55.
The
Julliard trained Taylor pays tribute to the pioneers of the
steel drum in his latest work, Symphonic Steel.
Featuring six dancers, all but one of the
evening¹s works will have the raw and melodious sound
of the steel pan as the base undertone.
The
steel band was introduced to the world in 1945, during a
turbulent time in Trinidad. The only instrument to be
invented in the 20th century, the steel drum has become
Trinidad¹s national instrument.
RONALD
TAYLOR's innovative process in the creation of this
piece has him composing the music while creating the dance
with his musicians, taking a more contemporary approach to
his year¹s production.
RONALD
TAYLOR's program will also include the remounting of
Beryl 'O' Beryl danced by the beautiful
Sharon Harvey. The piece is a tribute to Beryl
McBernie, the mother of Caribbean Dance, who played a
major role in the reconstruction of Trinidad and Tobago's
cultural identity. The music by André Tanker
is performed by an a cappella singer.
Finally,
dance enthusiasts will be treated to Mantis by one of
Taylor's mentors, the legendary Astor Johnson.
Born in
Trinidad and Tobago, RONALD TAYLOR has emerged as a
leading force in black Canadian dance with praise for his
seamless and eclectic fusion of ballet, modern dance and
ethnic dance. Since founding Canboulay Dance Theatre, for
whom he serves as Artistic Director and choreographer,
Ronald has created close to twenty works for the company
including last season¹s fascinating and spiritually
uplifting piece In The Depths of My Palais.
"Taylor's
dances are characterized by indigenous movements that while
rooted in tradition make room for improvisatory displays of
virtuoso dancing" - Deirdre Kelly, The Globe &
Mail
