Image and artifice crumble
away when an important businessman has his portrait painted
by a struggling artist who is not what she seems.
Portrait is a funny, touching flirtation
between two people who think they are from different
worlds.
In this
dark romantic comedy, a painter obsessed with her artistry
strives to live up to her bohemian image for a self-obsessed
businessman who is looking for more than just fame and
wealth. When he arrives at her studio to sit for his
portrait, neither has any idea how much they will reveal to
each other, or how much they will find in common.
Portrait
is Marisa Victor's fourth produced play, and the second play
to be produced by Allegoria Productions.
Portrait was first workshopped at the Alumnae
Theatre's New Ideas Festival, and the same creative team has
continued to develop the play, culminating in the launch of
its first full production.
Director
Lindy Zucker (Deep Sleep Diver - Tim Sims Playhouse,
Warriors - SWGC Theatre, Wally - Scripts in
Progress) helms a cast including Grania Maguire (Possible
Worlds - Silver Shield, Are You Afraid of the
Dark - Nickelodeon) as the artist and Stephen Near
(Beautiful City - Alumnae Theatre, playwright of
Quintessence - Reaching Symmetries at Artword
Alternative) as the businessman.
This
group of talented young artists also includes Production
Designer Paul Hardy (Technical Director of Alumnae Theatre's
New Ideas Festival) and Stage Manager Vanessa Cassels
(Classical Theatre Project).
As part
of Allegoria's ongoing support of important community and
charitable causes in Toronto, Portrait is also
a partial benefit for Sketch. Sue Cohen, artist-in-residence
at Sketch, will be painting in the lobby as the audience
enters. This feature of the show provides the audience with
the opportunity to watch the creation of a work of art live
and in person, as well as raising awareness and funds for
Sketch, a Toronto charity that teaches job and life skills
to homeless and street-involved youth through art. For more
information on Sketch, please visit www.sketch.ca.
