Playwright/poet Richard Sanger uses the circumstances surrounding 1909 Robert Edwin Peary expedition to the North Pole to scrutinize themes of love, human passion, and betrayal.
The textured and time-shifting narrative centers on Matthew Henson, the black man who risked his life accompanying Peary to the North Pole, only to be betrayed by the man he served and subsequently forgotten to history.
Contained in the Peary/Henson struggle, poet and Governor-General award-nominated playwright Sanger sees the broader representation of the universal human quest for the "North Pole". He uses this tale of monstrous deeds and lost love to illustrate our willingess to sacrifice our moral and personal values in pursuit of our goals.
