Bad Girls Kicking Ass

roller4.jpgAs we waited in the lineup for tickets to the Hammer City Roller Girls Mother’s Day Massacre yesterday (May 9), we were approached by a Cable 14 videographer. “What are you expecting to see?”, he asked me. “I have no idea”, I said, this being my first time. I blathered on for a while, trying to sound intelligent about something I knew nothing about. Afterwards, Judith said “He should have asked me. I would have said ‘bad girls kicking ass’.” He should have asked her.

burnin_ethyl.jpgWe had a great time. The Death Row Dames vs. The Hamilton Harlots. Pretty fierce. Despite all the display of attitude, not to mention the fierce monikers of the roller girls (“Chain Saw Mary”, “Boom Boom Betty”, “Cindy Lou Black and Blue”, “Tropi Kill Punch”), there was a down-home, good-time feel to it all. Kids running around batting at balloons, families sitting on blankets down on the rink (the “suicide seats”). There’s fast action, strategy and girls in fishnet stockings. What more can one ask? And afterwards, free admission to the rockabilly party at Pepper Jacks, where Donna Lovejoy (band) sang fifteen Buddy Holly covers in forty minutes, and Ginger St. James and Burnin’ Ethyl told us all about her “Boom Boom Room”.
