Labyrinth

A robin in a nest feeding a chick.
How can we find
that thread
drawing us
past
the distorted shapes
the harsh shadows
the flashing garish lights
through
the crashing
sighing
screeching
groaning
grunting
cursing
crying?

Where is that thread
that just now
a moment ago
we thought we held
between our fingers
guiding us
out of here
up upward
and out
of this
horrid
unreality?

A moment
of inattention
a glance away
a distraction
a thought
a dream
fingers loosen
grip slackens
muscles soften
eyelids drop
and the thread
is lost
as are we.
