Sur is a new play written by Ronald Weihs, based on a short story by Ursula K. Le Guin.
"If Captain Scott can do it, why can't we?" In 1909 a group of South American women set off - in secret, in order not to upset the men - on an expedition to the South Pole. A delightful feminist fable.
"Sur" means "south" in Spanish. The lure of Antarctica, the mysterious unknown continent in the south, is at the heart of LeGuin's story. In real history, the period from 1900 to 1912 was the time of intense and competitive exploration by the famous polar explorers such as Scott, Shackleton, and Amundsen - all men, and all seeking the prize: to be the first to reach the South Pole.
In Le Guin's tale, she speculates about how a group of women from South America in 1910 might handle an attempt on the pole, from a delightfully witty feminist perspective. The women, of course, can't tell their fathers, husbands or brothers, but must set off in secret. The men must never know what they did.
Our play is adapted from the Le Guin story, with her permission. The characters come to life as the play sets the tale in motion on the stage, with a lively ensemble cast, a beautiful magical set, songs, music and movement. It's a charming evening of theatre.
