Artword theatre held its first event on November 21, 1993, Judy and Jazz, featuring science fiction writer Judith Merril and master jazzman John T. Davis. We called it Artword Centre at first, because we planned to have art shows as well as theatre. However, we discovered that the press thought we must be a community centre or something, so we quickly changed to Artword Theatre and Artword Gallery. We were feeling our way, starting with what we called Artword Night Out on Sunday evenings. Our basic concept was to have two events that would not normally co-exist on the same stage the same night. We called it "rubbing artists up against each other". On November 28, .we had an evening of classical guitar improvisations by William Beauvais and poetry performance by Doleske, called Bush News, Beauvais and Books. December 5, Sounds and Clowns brought together Nobuo Kubota with Peter Jarvis and friends. Meanwhile, Ron Weihs was working with a group of actors on a musical play called Mama Says: You Are What You Do. The results were presented on December 12.
