Artword Gallery for the month of June: “Steel is the New Art”, images by metallurgist Shane Turcott, investigating steel failures with an electron microscope, from his series “Steel Image of the Month”. His title for the exhibition — “Steel is the New Art” — is used with permission from The Print Studio, playing on their campaign “Art is the New Steel” .
Friday June 10 from 7 to 11 pm, during the James North Art Crawl, Shane Turcott will be present.
Description of the exhibit:
Sometimes images of metals exhibit patterns worth pausing over. Nature hides captivating sights beneath the range of the human eye. The images in this exhibt reveal the intriguing patterns found within steel only visible under specialized microscopes. These pictures are taken of using an “electron microscope”, abbreviated as “SEM”. Instead of using light, these microscopes are able to see extremely high magnifications by imaging through electrons. Metallurgists use these microscopes to study metals and examine fractured components. And occasionally produce images of note.
Shane’s laboratory also sends out “Steel Image of the Month” — a once-a-month emailing of a microscopic picture of steel taken while investigating broken steel components. The emailing shares microscopic sights that one could find aesthetically pleasing. If we weren’t so technically minded, we might even call it “art.” To join, e-mail one_a_month@steelimage.ca.
