With our friend from Havana – Esperanza Luzbert Director, ICAP North American Division; and special guest: Dr. Keith Ellis, National Co-ordinator, Cuba for Haiti Campaign
Our friend from the Instituto Cubano de Amistad con Los Pueblos (ICAP). Translated, ICAP is the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples. Esperenza Luzbert, director of the North American Desk, will be visiting our city on Tuesday August 23rd, as part of a Canadian tour. She will discuss with us the situation of Cuba today. We encourage everyone to attend and be part of this exciting exchange with our Cuban friend!
About ICAP: ICAP is our sister organization in Cuba. Its work is focused on promoting people to people exchange and friendship between Cubans and peoples around the world. It strives to act as a force for peace, mutual exchange and true internationalism in the world. This aim is similar to the HFAC’s mandate of strengthening respectful relations between Canadians and Cubans. This reception will be an occasion for all those interested in the HFAC’s work and mandate to speak to Cubans who are involved in the work of building friendship between our peoples.
Cuba for Haiti: The HFAC is in the preliminary stages of planning for its leg of the upcoming Canada-wide Cuba for Haiti Tour, featuring a renowned Cuban doctor working in Haiti. As a lead up to that tour, we are very excited on this occasion to welcome back to Hamilton, National Co-ordinator of the Cuba for Haiti Campaign, Dr. Keith Ellis. Dr. Ellis will discuss with our community the excellent work of the Cuban medical professionals on the ground in Haiti. The Cuba for Haiti Campaign is a project of the Canadian Network on Cuba designed to promote the life affirming work of the Cubans in Haiti and also to raise funds to support that work. Dr. Ellis is also Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto and the esteemed author of many books, including his most recent, First Poet of the Americas: José María Heredia.
About Cuban Medical Relief in Haiti: At the time of the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, 402 Cuban internationalists were already on the ground in Haiti providing free medical services. These, together with many of the 500 Haitian doctors who had been trained in Cuba, attended to 1,102 Haitian patients within 24 hours of the earthquake. They have continued their work, boosted by an additional medical brigade which arrived promptly from Cuba. The Cubans do this work in Haiti purely in the spirit of helping their fellow human beings, without condition or expectation. All monies raised for the Cuba for Haiti Campaign goes directly to the relief and training efforts in Haiti.
Reservation: If you are able to join us, RSVP by Tuesday August 16 by emailing info@cubacanada.org at which time you will receive details of the reception location. Everyone is welcome!
Join us in making the community reception a success by giving our Cuban friends a warm Hamilton welcome!
