Vocalist Sophia Perlman has made a name for herself as one of Canada’s most promising young vocalists, impressing audiences and seasoned musicians alike with her musical maturity and her impressive ability as an improviser. Multi-award winning pianist and composer Adrean Farrugia is one of Canada’s most distinct voices on the piano. Fusing many diverse musical influences he has forged a personal sound which generates a uniquely individual creative statement.
Vocalist Sophia Perlman has made a name for herself as one of Canada’s most promising young vocalists, impressing audiences and seasoned musicians alike with her musical maturity and her impressive ability as an improviser. She has performed with many notable musicians including Adrean Farrugia, Terry Clarke, Jeff Healey, The Bob Brough Quartet, Richard Whiteman, Brandi Disterheft, Richard Underhill, The Toronto Jazz Orchestra, Ravi Naimpally, Kieran Overs, and the Darcy Hepner Big Band, as well as appearing weekly with The Vipers at Toronto’s Reservoir Lounge.
Sophia appears on the bassist Brandi Disterheft’s first album “Debut” which received a JUNO Award for Best Traditional Jazz Album, as well as “Ricochet”, the newest release by pianist and composer Adrean Farrugia, which was nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. She was also featured on recent releases from the Darcy Hepner Jazz Orchestra and the Toronto Jazz Orchestra, and is currently working on her debut album as a bandleader, as well as a new recording with The Vipers, which will be released in the fall of 2011.

As a vehicle for his skills as a composer, pianist and band leader, Adrean formed the ensemble RICOCHET in 2008. The band released their self-titled debut recording in 2010 on the main stage at the Toronto International Jazz festival. Since the album has received expansive radio play across Canada as well critical acclaim nationwide and has been nominated for a JUNO award (Canada’s GRAMMY’s) for best Contemporary Jazz Recording of 2011. Adrean won a JUNO award in 2008 for best Traditional Jazz Recording (Debut, Brandi Disterheft) and a Hamilton Music Award in 2010 for Pianist of the Year.
Currently on the music faculties of York University and Mohawk College of Arts and Technology in Ontario Canada, Mr. Farrugia teaches piano and improvisation and has also done workshops and clinics internationally at the University of Colorado, University of Toronto, The Banff Centre for the Arts, and the Polish Jazz Society’s annual Summer Jazz Workshop in Warsaw. Adrean has also been a contributing writer to piano guru Larry Fine’s publication “The Piano Book”, the world’s foremost periodical on all things piano. Adrean was also honored to be invited as a performer and panelist at the 63rd Conference On World Affairs in Boulder Colorado in 2011.
