Dance/Music Improvisation night, Jan 28

Tanisandpotatoes_c.jpg“Behind the Kiln”, Thursday January 28 at 8 pm (PWYC), a prototype  for an intermittently regular evening of dancer and musician improvised collaborations.  The idea is to pair up at least one dancer with at least one musician, and see what happens.  Performers confirmed so far include Tanis MacArthur and Anne Milne (dance) and Judith Sandiford (projections), musicians Annie Shaw and Sarah Good on vocals and feedback loops, Michael Morritti on stand-up bass, Jennifer Lockman on piano. Why does Tanis call it “Behind the Kiln”? — because if you leave wood to dry behind the kiln, it warps into all kinds of strange unpredictable shapes. Music: Fred D. Smith in concert, Sat Nov 21

FredDSmith_picKyleWeir.jpgFred D. Smith in concert at Artword Artbar, 15 Colbourne, Sat Nov 21 at 8 pm, no cover. Raised in the small town of Winona, Ont., Fred’s songwriting style is a draw back to the all night jam sessions his dad would have in the living room. When you mix oldtime country & western, rockabilly, 60’s rock, blues, gospel and folk, you get what Fred likes to call “FOLKADELIC”. Fred is a regular at the Wed “Artshare” evenings — can’t wait for a whole evening of his great music.

Music: Jericho in concert, Nov 14

Saturday Nov 14 at 8 pm, pwyc at the door. Jericho_IMG_2860_800.jpg€œJericho€ is multi-genre acoustic-based duo consisting of Jeremiah McCaw Budnark and Eric Bower. They describe their repertoire as `from roots to rock €“ our way!` The amalgam of Jeremiah`s `folkie` with Eric`s R&B background has provided them with a rich and varied repertoire (including some original material). It also helps that the pair share a finely developed sense of the absurd that often creeps into their performances.  [Photo by Kyle Weir]  http://jericho-duo.ca/ Continue reading

Crawl night, we had a blast

Artword1edited__DavidStephanieRomanello_700.jpgSept. 11 Arts Crawl — what a great night. Started with pianist Stephen Murray playing our baby grand, filling the place with Chopin nocturnes, Joplin rags, while the Arts Crawlers popped in and out. Then we had the first of our post-crawl performance nights. Then we kept going into the night as people came and went… Met many wonderful new friends, old friends, new neighbours. In Artword Gallery, David and Stephanie Romanello view Sandiford painting  (photo by David Romanello).

Artbar nearly open — busy programming….

We’re still working on behing-the-scenes stuff. Ron is programming an old-fashioned cash register (painfully labourious). I’m programming exhibitions in the gallery (way more fun than the cash register). And fixing this and that… We were closed over the weekend of Aug 28 and 29 while our kitchen was being inaugurated by some superb Hamilton chefs cooking for a private function nearby. Great to have such expertise in the place, even briefly.

J.P. Riemens’ Songwriters Workshop at This Ain’t Hollywood

Artword’s favourite Hamilton songwriter is coming to James North! The Tuesday night institution, hosted and wrangled by J.P. Riemens, has moved to This Ain’t Hollywood, 345 James Street North, at Murray. The Launch is Tuesday Sept. 1, 2009. We’ll be there (or we’ll try to be, since we need to be at our own place). You may recall that Artword’s most recent theatre production Tobacco Troubadour, was based on J.P.’s songs and featured the fabulous Bar Flies (Hamilton in April and Delhi in July).

street event, youme gallery, Aug 5

Bryce Kanbara, of youme gallery, is organizating a street event August 5  in front of the galleries along James Street North. Here is his note:
“I€™d like your permission to make chalk outlines of people on the sidewalks around your storefronts on Wednesday evening, Aug 5. The €œshadow paintings€ will commemorate the anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima Aug 6 and Nagasaki Aug 9. Everyone is welcome. The more people we have (chalkers and persons to lie on the ground) the faster we€™ll get done. We€™ll try to start around 5:30/6 pm.”

As of Friday August 21: – Ron made his first espresso; – we had the Artword baby grand piano moved from Toronto; – Ross Johnson tuned the piano on Wednesday and it’s ready to go; – the liquor licence arrived; – Bruce MacArthur made eight beautiful circular tops for the tables; – Judith has almost finished painting the tops and Ron varnishing them; – Gord Odegaard has rigged up elegant LED lighting over the bar.
Richard Chamberlain and Sepp Sipila played some wonderful jazz tonight, just to try things out. Jennifer Lockman will test the piano tomorrow (Saturday the 22nd).
